Do I Need a Physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist?

  • See a Physiotherapist if: You have a new injury, are in acute pain, require a diagnosis, or need “hands-on” manual treatment to restore movement.
  • See an Exercise Physiologist if: You have a chronic condition (diabetes, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis), are recovering from a long-term injury, or need a structured gym-based program to improve strength and capacity or are wanting to improve sporting performance

The Allsports Indooroopilly Advantage: Unsure? Our team works collaboratively. It is common for patients to start with Physiotherapy for and transition seamlessly to Exercise Physiology for long term exercise management—all under one roof. Not sure? Give us a call on 3878 9011 to clarify.

Facilities & Funding

Our clinic features standard private consultation rooms for physiotherapy and a fully equipped clinical rehabilitation gym for exercise physiology. This allows us to guide you from the treatment table to the squat rack safely and effectively.

We accept all major funding streams:

  • Private Health Insurance: HICAPS on-site for Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology.
  • Medicare: Chronic Disease Management (EPC) plans accepted for both services (GP referral required).
  • NDIS: Registered provider for Capacity Building supports.
  • DVA: Gold and White Card holders.
  • WorkCover Queensland: Return-to-work rehabilitation programs.

What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and an Exercise Physiologist?

While both professionals help you move better, their focus differs. Physiotherapists are professionals in diagnosis, injury management, and reducing pain through hands-on treatment (manual therapy) and early-stage rehab. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) specialize in the prescription of exercise to manage chronic conditions, improve long-term functional capacity, prevent injury recurrence and improve sport performance. At Allsports Indooroopilly, our teams work together to ensure you get the right care at the right stage of your recovery.

Do I need a referral to see a practitioner at Allsports Indooroopilly?

No, you do not need a referral to see a Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist as a private patient. However, if you are claiming a rebate through Medicare (Chronic Disease Management Plan), DVA, or WorkCover Queensland, a valid referral from your General Practitioner (GP) is required before your appointment.

Can I see both a Physio and an Exercise Physiologist for the same injury?

Yes, and this often produces the best results. A common treatment pathway involves seeing a Physiotherapist first to settle acute symptoms and restore range of motion and foundation exercise, then transitioning to an Exercise Physiologist for a strength and conditioning program to prevent the issue from returning. Our practitioners prioritise communication to ensure your care is seamless.

Is Exercise Physiology covered by the NDIS?

Yes. Allsports Indooroopilly is a registered NDIS provider. We deliver Exercise Physiology services under the “Improved Health and Wellbeing” and “Improved Daily Living” support categories. We work with self-managed, plan-managed, and agency-managed participants to build independence and capacity through exercise.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and closed-in footwear (sneakers/runners) suitable for movement. If you are seeing a Physiotherapist for a lower-limb injury, shorts are recommended. If you are seeing an Exercise Physiologist, be prepared to do some light movement in our clinical gym.

Does Medicare cover Physiotherapy or Exercise Physiology?

Medicare does not cover standard private consultations. However, if you have a chronic medical condition (present for 6+ months), your GP may provide you with a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan—formerly known as an EPC. This entitles you to Medicare rebates for up to 5 allied health services per calendar year. There may still be a gap payment. We accept these referrals for both Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology.
