Recovering from an ACL injury or reconstruction is a long journey that requires expert guidance. Our physiotherapists will work with you through each phase of your rehabilitation. From preparing you for surgery, to regaining full movement, rebuilding strength and returning to your pre-injury activities and sport.

Pre-operative

Physiotherapy here focuses on reducing swelling and getting your knee as mobile and strong as possible to help you feel confident going into surgery, knowing you’ve already started building the foundation for a successful rehabilitation journey.

Post-operative

  • Early stage – swelling, movement and activation

In the early weeks post ACL reconstruction surgery, the focus is on reducing pain and swelling, restoring knee movement, and re-activating muscles. This stage is about the fundamentals and safe progress, so you’re ready to advance to the mid-stage strengthening and functional phases of your rehabilitation.

  • Mid stage – strength and function

During this phase, the Physiotherapist will guide you through progressive exercises that improve strength, motor control, balance and power, gradually reintroducing you to more movements and higher loads. The aim is to prepare your knee for daily life and pre-injury activities.

  • Late stage – return to activity / sport

Physiotherapy uses evidence-based physical testing to ensure your strength, agility, and conditioning match the demands of your activity or sport. With tailored, sport-specific programs, we help you not only return to play safely, but return with confidence and optimal performance.
