What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy or Aquatic physiotherapy is the use of physiotherapy techniques and principles applied in a warm water pool.
The buoyancy and warmth of the water often allows for much earlier return to normal function and exercise after injury, immobility or surgical procedure. Hydrotherapy is one of the best modalities for reducing pain and regaining or improving movement in all joints of the body.
Hydrotherapy can be used alone or in conjunction with land based treatment of any form. If you are receiving land based treatment we will be happy to liase with your practitioners to ensure our treatments are complimenting theirs.
The qualified hydro therapist will design you an individual treatment program for your specific needs. Once you are proficient in your program you can begin performing the programs independently.
Benefits of Hydrotherapy
- Decrease Pain and Improve Range of Movement
The buoyancy of the water supports the painful joint permitting movement usually unobtainable on land
- Improve and Maintain Strength
Exercises of any degree of exertion may be performed in the water from very small effort for early recuperation to very large for elite fitness.
The pressure of the surrounding water acts to reduce swelling
as the painful area is heated and supported muscle spasm is diminished.
Deficiencies in core stability are very obvious in the water and and be retrained effectively
Balance exercises can be performed without the fear of fall or injury
Where exercise on land may be too difficult or painful to walk long distances, support from the water allows exercise with no impact.
